Is a silk pillowcase worth it?

Similar to silk scrunchies, I had been on the fence about buying a silk pillowcase for a while. Retailing for anywhere from $80 to $110, they just seemed a little gimmicky to me. While I do tend to sleep on my side or stomach, I felt like my hair was healthy enough that it wasn’t worth it. But once I switched to silk scrunchies, I noticed a big difference in the overall quality of my hair – less tangles, no ponytail bends, and less breakage. They were such a gamechanger for me that I finally decided to buy a silk pillowcase. Keep reading for my review and tips on saving money if you decide to get one, too.

are silk pillowcases better for your hair?

Yes, silk pillowcases noticeably better for your hair, as well as your skin. Benefits of a silk pillowcase include:

  • anti-aging as it reduces the appearance of fine lines, especially if you are a side or stomach sleeper

  • reduces sleep wrinkles

  • helps lock in hair hydration

  • reduces frizz

  • reduces tangles

  • reduces bedhead

  • reduces creases in hair and maintains hairstyle

  • preserves curls

  • reduces breakage and damage, especially if you sleep with wet or damp hair

satin vs silk pillowcases

A common dupe for silk pillowcases are those made of satin, as they feel similar at a cheaper price. Satin may seem like a good alternative, but satin is often created from a blend of synthetic fibers like polyester and rayon. Satin is more absorbent, yet won’t last as long because the overall quality is lower. While satin is still a step up from typical cotton pillowcases in regards to hair health, it’s ultimately worth it to save up and get a silk pillowcase if you can.

are silk pillowcases worth the price?

At anywhere from $90 to $110 per pillowcase, it’s hard to justify the price of a silk pillowcase, but they’re absolutely worth the investment. With numerous hair and skin benefits, I’ve found that a silk pillowcase has really made a difference. There’s less breakage, my hair feels more less tangled in the mornings, and I don’t wake up with creases on my face from sleeping too hard. They’re also hypoallergenic, which is ideal for sensitive skin.
