Undressed Tans Au Naturel Gradual Tanning Mousse Review

Undressed Tans is a self-tanning brand that provides sensitive skin-friendly tanning products. All of their self-tanners are vegan, cruelty-free, use 100% Natural DHA, are free of parabens, phthalate, sulfate, gluten, and are dematologist and clinically tested. They’re also designed to give you a “realistic” tan, so you don’t have to worry about looking orange.

I’m a big fan of their The Nudist line (both the Light/ Medium Self-Tanning Lotion and Dark Tanning Mousse - check out my reviews here and here), but I was a little hesitant to try the Au Naturel Gradual Tanning Mousse. I find self-tanning at home to sometimes be a tedious, time-intensive process, and I hate it when a self-tanner ends up being too light, because it feels like a waste of time to me. But because I’m naturally very pale, I still need to make sure that my tan still looks believable and not orange, which extra-dark tanners can sometimes do.

The Undressed Tans Au Naturel Gradual Tanning Mousse pleasantly surprised me, and I think it’s a great self-tanning option for those with paler skin or those who want a natural tan in the winter months.

undressed tans au naturel gradual tanning mousse review and application tips

The Undressed Tans Au Naturel Gradual Tanning Mousse is a great tanner for beginners, those wanting subtle color in the winter months, or an overall subtle tan.

It’s an easy self-tanner to apply and use, and the color payoff is subtle yet natural. The foam is clear, so while you don’t have a color guard to guide your application, you also don’t have to worry about transfer onto your clothes or sheets. The product is unscented, which is ideal for sensitive skin types, yet you will notice the “self-tanner smell” the next day, although it’s very subtle.

This product ideally requires 6-8 hours of application time (with a second coat applied halfway through) for maximum results, and the tan will develop for up to 24 hours after. Regarding results, it’s a truly natural looking tan - not orange at all, but also not super dark. This tanner has “clean” ingredients that makes it safe for sensitive skin, but the results aren’t as dramatic as some of the other mousses you might be used to (like Loving Tan).

The tan lasts about a week, full ten days, fades nicely, and removes easily with an exfoliating mitt.

If you’re looking for something a little more glowy that still has sensitive-skin ingredients in mind, I recommend the Undressed Tans The Nudist Dark Tanning Mousse; it’s still natural on pale skin, yet a little deeper than the Au Naturel formulation. View my full review and results here.

tips for applying au naturel gradual tanning mousse

  • Use a mitt for a streak-free application that won’t stain your hands. I like to use a brush to buff in the product and help blend out trickier areas like elbows, wrists, knees and ankles.

  • The first time I tested this tanner, I applied one coat, left it on for 6 hours, then showered before bed. I did not notice much of a tan the next day; it was disappointing, to be honest. To get the most out of this tanning mousse, you want to apply a second coat at the halfway mark.

  • For best results. I applied the product at 3pm, left it on for 3 hours, applied another coat, waited another 4 hours, and then showered before bed (7 hours total application time). I didn’t notice much of a difference right away, but woke up with a subtle tan that deepened each day. I let the product continue to develop for 24 hours and took the photos at the same time the next day.

    • I repeated this process three nights in a row, and found that I needed 3 applications to get a noticeable yet natural tan. One application is enough if you want a winter tan/ natural glow, but if you want to look like you have a tan, I recommend 3 applications total.

  • There’s really no scent to this tanner, which I loved because fragrance is unnecessary and can irritate sensitive skin. I did notice a slight “self-tanner smell” the next day, but it was extremely subtle compared to other self-tanners, especially since I applied two coats of this overall.

  • The mousse is clear, so there’s color guard - you don’t necessarily have to worry about the color transferring onto your sheets or clothes, but I still recommend wearing darker, loose fitted clothes just in case.

where to buy undressed tans au naturel gradual tanning mousse

Undressed Tans products are sold directly on the brand’s website. Shipping is quick and the brand occasionally offers discounts around the holidays (including summer holidays), which is nice.

FAQs about undressed tans au naturel gradual tanning mousse

is undressed tans au naturel gradual tanning mousse suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes. My skin is extremely sensitive and I did not get a reaction, even with two coats applied three days in a row. It’s a super subtle tan with mindful ingredients, so I think it’s safe for most to use, but recommend patch-testing if you’re concerned.

does undressed tans au naturel gradual tanning mousse break you out?

Not in my experience. My friends who are more acne-prone haven’t had a problem either, but I would consult with your dermatologist if you are concerned.

how long does it take for the tan to develop?

The website doesn’t really specify this, nor does it say how long to leave the tanner on for. Because this isn’t an express tanner, I applied the tanner for a total of 7 hours, with a second coat halfway through. I washed the tanner off before bedtime, woke up with a subtle tan, and noticed full results about 24 hours later.

how long does the tan last?

The tan lasted a full 3 days after my final application, and then started to fade. It was fully gone a week after the final application.

is undressed tans au naturel gradual tanning mousse easy to remove?

Yes, although the Undressed Tans Au Naturel Gradual Tanning Mousse provides a subtle tan that fades really nicely, so you don’t have to remove it as deliberately as you do for most other self-tanners. I applied this mousse 3 days in a row, and it took about 3 days for the tan to start to fade afterwards. I then used an exfoliating mitt on 7th day to lightly buff out the tan, and it was fully gone.
